The challenge

Most Charlotte-area therapists aren't trained in OCD

If you live in Matthews, Mint Hill, Concord, or Huntersville and search for an "OCD therapist near me," you'll find plenty of general therapists who list OCD as one of dozens of things they treat. But OCD isn't something general talk therapy can fix — it requires specific, evidence-based approaches that most therapists simply haven't been trained in.

Standard therapy can actually make OCD worse. A therapist who provides reassurance, explores the "meaning" behind intrusive thoughts, or uses talk therapy alone may inadvertently feed the OCD cycle rather than break it.

That's why working with a specialist matters. Effective OCD treatment uses ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) and I-CBT (Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) — approaches designed specifically to target how OCD works in the brain.

You don't need to drive far for specialized care. My Charlotte office is 15–30 minutes from most communities in the metro area.
Why specialization matters

General therapy vs. specialized OCD treatment

When it comes to OCD, the type of therapy matters as much as the therapist. Here's what makes specialized treatment different.

General therapist OCD specialist (Anna)
ERP training Minimal or none IOCDF & BTTI certified
I-CBT for OCD Not typically offered Specialized I-CBT training
OCD caseload 1–5 OCD clients 70%+ OCD-focused caseload
Recognizes OCD subtypes May miss subtle presentations Treats all themes & subtypes
Reassurance patterns May inadvertently reassure Understands the reassurance cycle
In-session exposures Not typically done First exposure always done together
Evidence-based treatment

How I treat OCD and related disorders

Treatment is selected based on your diagnosis and how your specific cycle shows up. For OCD, I use specialized approaches that directly target the mechanisms keeping the disorder going.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

ERP is the gold-standard treatment for OCD. It focuses on changing your behavioral response to intrusive thoughts by gradually reducing compulsions and avoidance. I always do the first exposure with you in session — you'll never be sent home to face something alone that we haven't practiced together first.

Inference-Based CBT (I-CBT)

I-CBT targets the reasoning patterns that pull the mind into "what if" stories — even when nothing is actually happening. It identifies inferential confusion: the moment attention shifts from reality into an imagined scenario. I-CBT requires specialized training beyond standard CBT, which is why most therapists don't offer it.

Specialized CBT

Adapted for health anxiety, emetophobia, BDD, and perfectionism — conditions that often overlap with OCD.

ACT

Building psychological flexibility to stay present with discomfort while moving toward what matters to you.

Prolonged Exposure

Evidence-based treatment for trauma and PTSD, helping gradually approach trauma-related memories and situations.

Common questions

Charlotte-area OCD therapy FAQ

Is there an OCD specialist near Matthews or Mint Hill, NC?

Yes. Anna Schneiderman, LCSW, is the OCD therapist Charlotte area families turn to, located just 15 minutes from Matthews and Mint Hill. She provides ERP and I-CBT therapy — gold-standard treatments specifically designed for OCD. Most general therapists in the Matthews and Mint Hill area don't offer specialized OCD treatment, which is why many clients in these communities come to Anna's Charlotte practice.

What makes an OCD specialist different from a general therapist?

An OCD specialist has advanced training in ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) and focuses a significant portion of their practice on OCD. Anna's caseload is 70%+ OCD and related disorders, she is BTTI certified through the International OCD Foundation, and she is trained in I-CBT — a specialized approach that requires additional training beyond standard CBT. General therapists may list OCD but typically lack this depth of training and clinical experience.

How far is Anna's office from Concord, Huntersville, and Gastonia?

Anna's Charlotte office is approximately 25 minutes from Concord and Kannapolis, 20 minutes from Huntersville and Cornelius, and 30 minutes from Gastonia. Many clients from these communities find the drive worthwhile because specialized OCD treatment isn't available closer to home. Telehealth is also available for all North Carolina residents.

Do you offer telehealth for Charlotte-area clients?

Yes. Many Charlotte-area clients alternate between in-person and telehealth depending on their schedule. Telehealth can be especially effective for OCD treatment because it allows you to practice exposures in your real-life environment. All sessions use secure, HIPAA-compliant video.

What conditions do you treat besides OCD?

In addition to OCD, Anna specializes in health anxiety, emetophobia (fear of vomiting), body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), specific phobias including driving anxiety, and perfectionism. These conditions often overlap with OCD and benefit from the same evidence-based treatment approaches.

Do you work with teenagers in the Charlotte area?

Yes. Anna works with teens ages 16 and older as well as adults. OCD often emerges during adolescence, and early intervention with a specialist can make a significant difference. Both in-person and telehealth sessions are available for teen clients.
